Pelion – Surrender to it’s Magic

Παραλία Νταμούχαρης

Pelion is magical throughout the entire year.

It is sure that even if you choose only one of it’s villages as a favorite one, then it would only be due to your own mood at the time of the visit rather than it’s actual beauty advantages. The villages of Pelion compete in natural beauty and it would be difficult to favor one over the others.

In the summer you will be dazzled by Pelion’s beaches. Turquoise water and vast vegetation reaching down to the shores are the ingredients that make this place look like heaven on earth. If you head to the South you will find the small picturesque settlement of Ntamouhari. A beautiful beach covered with white peddles that start exactly where the canyon ends.

A scene from the well known Mamma Mia movie starring Meryl Strip was actually filmed In the small port of Ntamouhari.

During the winter Pelion is still amazingly charming. The ski center in Chania awaits the avid ski lovers as well as the ones that simply adore the view of a snowed scenery.

During Spring everything is blooming, the leafs are greener than ever and the scents make you giddy and inspired. In autumn everything turns into yellow, orange, red and brown. The most beautiful colors in the palette of nature cast their paint on this scenery. Once you see them, you can never forget.

24 villages – each one gifted with unique beauty and grace. Villages of historical heritage, picturesque villages, touristic, quiet or popular. Villages for every taste. The visitor can choose the ones to love or prefer.

Walk down the alleys of Makrinitsa.

Admire the charming manors in Zagora.

Buy traditional sweets and local products in Vizitsa.

Indulge in local savoury mezedes (treats) in Milies.

Walk in Tsagkarada’s  trails inside the lush vegetation.

and continue discovering Chorefto, Trikeri, Chorto, Agio Lavredio, Lehonia, Neohori, Milina and so many more. Choices are endless.

For accommodation in Pelion you can visit
They are the experts that can provide information on a variety of choices.

I personally recommend Aglaida in Tsagkarada for which you can find more details in the previous article.

For those fond of skiing and heavy snow, I recommend Manthos Hotel that is conveniently located only 1,5 km away from the ski centre which also includes a gym, spa, and an inside heated pool.

Finally, if you choose to stay by the beach a good choice is Maistrali in Afissos

In “Patis” in Zagora you will savour boar, goat cooked in parchment paper and a big variety of classical Pelion mezedes (savoury starter dish) and tastes, all inside a traditional environment.

The place where tastes really take off though is Kritsa restaurant in the central square of Portaria. Try the creamy pumpkin soup, the pies with traditional handmade phyllo, spetsofay, greens cooked with fried eggs, galotiri (a special mix of cheese and milk) and local tsitsiravla (wild grown greens of Pelion). Tastes that you will never forget.

Departing from Pelion you will pass by the coastal city of Volos. Don’t miss the opportunity to stop in tsipouradiko“Lepi”. The only decision you have to make there while ordering is whether the plates chosen by the chef for you will be coming with anise flavoured tsipouro or plain. The mezedes will keep coming on the table and each plate will be better than the other.

There is an endless list of activities to chose from while in Pelion. In my recent visit I had the opportunity to enjoy hiking in a trail starting from Tsagkarada and ending down to Ntamouhari beach. The hiking experience was guided by the experienced team of Trekking Hellas.

You can also test your skills in climbing on the rocks of Fakistra, speed up your adrenaline by canyoning in Mylopotamos Canyon, travel with a canoe kayak in quieter routes, try horse riding in Milies or ski during the winter in the ski centre of Chania.
