At the end of August, we visited Andros. The trip from Rafina lasted two hours. I was looking forward to these holidays, but my joy had fled away since I waited so long. Thus, when the ship’s door started to descend I cast a casual glance to the landscape and I remained indifferent and negative to what came into my view.

Nevertheless, nobody can but be moved in front of the Noblewoman! Before the end of the day, the island had unfolded its nets and I had begun to feel enchanted of what I saw.

The previous days, the holidaymakers’ hordes had gone away and people like us – who were on leave – were enjoying the quietness, the beauties and the island sights.

If you visit Andros for the first time you have to know that the distances are long so you’ll definitely need a car.

So in order to help you, I prepared a list with the 10 most important sights that you mustn’t miss to visit.

1. CHORA OF ANDROS

Built on a peninsula is stretching indolently up to the edge of the sea.

Walk across the large marble pedestrian street with the restaurants and the shops. Admire the majestic public buildings. Most of them are donations from eminent habitats of the island.

Get into the narrow alleys with the wonderful mansions and the trim yards. Get to Riva’s square where the statue of the Unknown Sailor is situated.  On the opposite side, you’ll see the remains of the Venetian castle and the Tourlitis Lighthouse. It is built on a rock into the sea and has been standing there since 1887. It is world- wide unique.

You can swim in Niborio or in Paraporti. These are two beaches on the right and on the left of the island.

Walk to the Panagia Thalassini and do not miss to have a coffee in the central square under the trees shade.
